2.15: Understand the Factors that Affect the Rate of Movement of Substances into and out of Cells, to include the effects of Surface Area to Volume Ratio, Temperature and Concentration Gradient

FACTORS THAT AFFECT RATE OF MOVEMENT:

FACTOR
EXPLANATION
SURFACE AREA TO VOLUME RATIO
  • Larger the Surface Area to Volume Ratio, Molecules will have greater Surface Area in which to Diffuse through, increasing the Rate of Movement
TEMPERATURE
  • Increase in Temperature, Molecules will gain in Kinetic Energy
  • More Successful, Frequent Collisions, Rate of Movement Increases
CONCENTRATION GRADIENT
  • The Greater the Difference in Concentration Inside and Outside, the Stronger the Concentration Gradient
  • Molecules can Diffuse through more easily
