5.20: Evaluate the Potential for Using Cloned Transgenic Animals, for Example to Produce Commercial Quantities of Human Antibodies or Organs for Transplantation

CLONED TRANSGENIC ANIMALS: Offspring Produced by Asexual Reproduction which are Identical to their Transgenic Parent, Containing Genes from Different Species

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF CLONED TRANSGENIC ANIMALS:

ADVANTAGE
DISADVANTAGE
Clones will Produce Identical Offspring
Difficult (Cloning Animals is a Long and Difficult Process)
Fast (Clones are Faster to Produce)
Vulnerable to Change in Conditions (Can Only Exploit Suitable Environment)
Large Number of Clones (More Produced)
Decreases Variation as Offsprings are Clones
Genetic Modification to Small Population of Animals will be Passed on to Rest of Population
Disease can Affect Whole Population as Clones are Identical (No Variation)
Produce Protein that is Needed to Treat Human Diseases E.g, Human Antibodies

Develop Organs that can be Used in Organ Transplants that will Not be Rejected by the Human Immune System
