2.67: Understand the Origin of Carbon Dioxide and Oxygen as Waste Products of Metabolism and their Loss from the Stomata of the Leaf

METABOLISM: All Chemical Reactions that Take Place Inside Living Cells

PLANTS AND METABOLISM
Metabolic Reactions that takes Place in Plants are:

   1.  AEROBIC RESPIRATION: The Breakdown of Glucose to release Energy in
Cells in the Presence of Oxygen to Produce Carbon Dioxide and Water (and Energy)

   EQUATION:

Glucose       +       Oxygen       →       Carbon dioxide       +       Water
C6H12O6                      6O2                               6CO2                          H2O

   2. PHOTOSYNTHESIS: Conversion of Light Energy from the Sun into Chemical
Energy by Chlorophyll such as Glucose, which is then stored as Starch

   EQUATION OF PHOTOSYNTHESIS:

Carbon Dioxide       +       Water       →       Glucose       +       Oxygen
         6CO2                          H2O                    C6H12O6                     6O2

As a Waste Product, Plants will Produce Carbon Dioxide and Oxygen which will be Removed through the Stomata (When It is Open) by Diffusion
