2.72: Describe Ultrafiltration in the Bowman’s Capsule and the Composition of the Glomerular Filtrate

ULTRAFILTRATION: When Blood Enters the Glomerulus Under High Pressure and Components are Forced Out and Filtered to Produce Glomerular Filtrate

ULTRAFILTRATION
Diagram showing How Ultrafiltration takes Place in the Nephron
PROCESS:
  • Renal Artery will Transport Oxygenated Blood to the Bowman’s Capsule under High Pressure (Blood Carried by Artery is Always Under High Pressure, Excluding the Pulmonary Artery)
  • Pressure is Further Increased in the Glomerulus Due to Thinner Tubes, Forcing Components Out of the Blood to be Filtered to Produce Glomerular Filtrate: Water, Salts, Glucose and Urea

COMPONENTS OF GLOMERULAR FILTRATE:

COMPONENT
REABSORBED AT
WATER
Collecting Duct
SALTS
Loop of Henle
GLUCOSE
Proximal Convoluted Tubule
UREA
Not Reabsorbed
