3.32: Understand that Resistance to Antibiotics can Increase in Bacterial Populations, and Appreciate How such an Increase can Lead to Infections being Difficult to Control

ANTIBIOTICS: Kills Harmful Micro-organisms such as Bacteria and Pathogens

RESISTANCE TO ANTIBIOTICS IN BACTERIA:

ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANT BACTERIA
Diagram showing How Population of Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria Increases
EXPLANATION:
  • Increase in the Use of Antibiotics, Bacteria will Undergo Variation caused by Rare and Random Mutations
  • Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria will Survive and will Reproduce by Binary Fission
  • They will Pass on Gene and Produce Offspring that will Carry the Same Antibiotic Resistant Gene
  • Overtime, Population of Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria will Increase as a Result

CONSEQUENCES:
  • Increase in the Population of Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria will cause Infections and Diseases to be Harder to Cure and Control as it will be Difficult to Find Antibiotics that Bacteria is Not Resistant to
  • There are also Often Superbugs which are Resistant to All the Antibiotics that we know of, Making it More Difficult to Find Antibiotics that are Effective
