3.33: Understand that the Incidence of Mutations can be Increased by Exposure to Ionising Radiation (For Example Gamma Rays, X - Rays and Ultraviolet Rays) and Some Chemical Mutagens (For Example Chemicals in Tobacco)

MUTATION: Rare, Random Change in Genetic Material that Can be Inherited

CHANCES OF MUTATIONS CAN BE INCREASED BY:

   IONISING RADIATION
  • Electromagnetic Spectrums can cause Mutations when they Come into Contact with DNA Molecules or Chromosomes

  • EXAMPLES: Gamma Rays, X - Rays and Ultraviolet Rays
   CHEMICAL MUTAGENS
  • Chemicals can Increase the Rate of Mutations such as Tar in Cigarettes

  • EXAMPLES: Tobacco
